A member of CiF just posted this:

Xxx Holic transfert from Young Magazine to Bessatsu Shônen Magazine
http://www.news-paradise.com/index.php?news=150

In Chapter # 204 of Xxx Holic (clamp) present in Young Magazine # 16 (On Sale Saturday) we learn that this chapter will be the last published in Young Magazine. With effect from the next chapter, the series will be published in Shounen Magazine Bessatsu.

So the series moves from a Seinen magazine to a Shonen Magazine, and the rate goes from weekly to monthly.

The resumption of the series (With Chapter # 205) will be held in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine # 07 (On sale June 9). At that time the series will be entitled to the magazine cover and color pages.

Should we expect a change in Holic's story due to this...?

That's exactly what I was asking myself too D:

Heheh, it kinda gives me a mental image of a new direction for the storyline; Watanuki's multi-chpater training for an upcoming mysterious tournament! First event: epic lounging, followed by competitive pipe smoking. Give it your best, Watanuki :P

surprising, considering that clamp-net just listed xxxholic down for young magazine through april 5 with tuesday's update, but heiji-sama usually posts legit news. wonders if it is an unplanned move.

Are you getting a X/Gohou Drug vibe here? I sure as hell don't want to see more unfinished Clamp series... :/

i hope 'unfinished' is not the case.

looking at the positive...
1. theoretically longer, more involved chapters (hopefully more than 15 pages)
2. higher chance that people will purchase the magazine (it has other manga by some pretty popular mangaka..and isn't littered by bikini girls)
3. a general revival of interest in the manga

as far as the 'genre' change...I don't think clamp's story will be affected as much as we might think.

BUT..booo at the long break.

The mangettes are still listed on some online sites for August. Maybe they'll be wrapping up Kobato soon, and they'll just have the new series & xxxholic monthly.

*crosses fingers* I suppose it also means that xxxHOLiC will continue to run for quite some time yet, since there really is no need to transfer the series that's about to finish. Yeah, positive thinking, positive thinking. XD

Change of publisher means (probably) different cover design for future volumes and (definitely) delays with English publication. Not that I'm buying English xxxHOLiC releases, but... *sigh*

It's not a change of publisher -- both magazines (Young and Bessatsu) are distributed by Kodansha o/ Which means nothing changes aside from what the actual anthology magazine it's published in.

Not working.

This isn't even like X, when the magazine was shut down. Why on earth are they moving it? And to a shounen magazine?

is it too much to hope that this is going to turn into an april fool's joke?

Date: 2010-03-18 12:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zeldas.livejournal.com
Because they're CLAMP and if they don't switch magazines, have fits with editors and/or put things on hiatus, they just can't go on with their daily lives.

Here's hoping? /o\

Wasn't X serialized in Asuka? Asuka is still running, I believe. The series that got shelved because the magazine suddenly died was Clover, which was serialized in Amie.

Not only a long break, but a change or magazine/format/genre?! What's next? Turning xxxHOLiC into hentai, perhaps?
So @#$%ing mad here.

...I trust that this is all part of some clever plan to pace their work so they can, say, revive Gohou Drug or provide longer Kobato chapters. Otherwise, I will be just a leeetle annoyed. -_-

Not that this is so different from when xxxHolic was going on frequent breaks that made it more monthly than weekly anyway, I guess. And, as nokiirat pointed out, there are advantages. So I'll save my complaints. I really do hope there's a good reason for this, though.

Now that xxxHolic be transferred to Bessatsu Shonen Magazine you remember this: we need a raw-provider xD.

...

Why is everyone freaking out that it's going monthly? They've been so inconsistent with the releases for months that it makes sense to move it to a monthly magazine. I wouldn't doubt if that's the reason it's moving.

And it moving to a shounen rather than a seinen won't change anything story-wise. If TRC continuously ran in a shounen magazine (which mostly made sense, but in comparison to titles it ran alongside, like Fairy Tail, it was kind of out of place), and X ran in a shoujo magazine (despite being extremely violent and bloody)... I don't think Holic moving from a seinen rather than a shounen will make much difference.

/shrug. As long as we can get someone to provide the raws, it really doesn't change much.

This. I remember the times when we'd wait for over a couple of months only to get a minuscule chapter in return. Not that it doesn't happen with monthly chapters, but I know Kobato. has had far less breaks ever since TRC ended, and they're considerably lengthier chapters, as well-- in comparison to xxxHOLiC chapters, that is. Hopefully this change means we'll be getting steady, longer xxxHOLiC chapters from now on.

Blood and violence doesn't really stop something being shoujo... Well, mature shoujo anyway.

Date: 2010-03-18 05:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] samekh.livejournal.com
The story still didn't read very much like a shoujo overall though. It could have easily been considered a shounen story. Hell, it read more like a shounen than a lot of TRC, if you ask me.

Eh, I always thought TRC was masquerading as shounen anyway. (Though perhaps less so at the moment)

X is quite half and half I suppose, there's a lot of character/emotional enthasis, but then a lot of random fighting too. It's very debatable, we'll have to agree to disagree I guess. :)

Date: 2010-03-18 05:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] samekh.livejournal.com
Well, I'm not disagreeing with that. TRC is decidedly less shounen than... well, most standard fare shounen.

I agree, you got a lot of both. I don't think it's really straightforward in being either genre, but a happy medium of the two. Although I think it's still more shounen than TRC -- my point was basically that changing magazines and running it in a magazine that doesn't outright fit the "genre" doesn't really seem to matter. It's not as if CLAMP is going to drastically change their storytelling because of it, after all. Which appears to be a concern of people's.

My thoughts exactly. Also, personally I prefer 40-something pages once a month than a dozen a week, I get into it more.

I just hope this is a sign the series still isn't in its last legs. I don't think I'm ready for it to end. I'm greedy and I want more of it, I think it still has so much potential.

I'm seconding your last paragraph. As long as it doesn't end I don't think I'll mind that much getting monthly releases, especially not if the chapters are longer as well.

see when people say they're concerned about story changes, what they really mean is BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE GAY?!?!

or maybe that's just me. (i would still read it even if it went all "no homo" on us - I'd just be really, really sad)

Speaking of the GAY, people tend to forget it was published in Young Magazine, and they prefer big chested women. With all the fanservice lately I am quite surprised they managed to pull it off as far as they got.

I don't think we should worry. CLAMP doesn't care about little finicky things like 'Publish Shounen Only Here'. They don't care how many puppies are being killed, they don't care if your magazine is aimed at Men Who Stare At Boobs, they will put in the gay.

Yeah, I remember the times when I was reading Holic in the school computer labs, and waiting 4-5 weeks for anything. Now we're waiting weird sets of 1,2, or 3 weeks, so if the price for consistency waiting a month, it just means that I've got three series I like coming out at the same time now. XD

I'm actually happy with the month move, I can think of numerous times when I ranted about CLAMP to friends, or when I used CLAMP to talk about a webcomic I love that was horrible about updating when it said it would. I'm FINE with whenever updates happen, just please stop giving us deadlines you never meet.

How thin the trust goes with that type of thing- the fact that I can more or less not trust the writer to meet any deadline they give us- has got me close to stop reading until the series was over a few times. Going to monthly updates will hopefully help some.

Going with a shonnen magazine I don't mind too much, but I do wonder what Japan thinks about smoking. I don't know why but I notice a LOT more with Watanuki smoking then I ever did with Yuuko. :/

Also -- this isn't the first time they've switched magazines for a manga. Kobato originally ran in Sunday GX, a seinen magazine -- now it's running in Newtype, which is a much more broad audience to aim at.

Hopefully they'll make the the story bigger. D.gray-man went monthly but turned out 40+ pages of story. So if CLAMP does that then it's okay.

Also, I mean, HOLiC being published in Young Magazine with Yuuko gone...how many disappointed guys do you think there are due to the loss of Yuuko's boobs?

I don't get what the big deal is. I always thought xxxHolic had more of a shonen feeling than a seinen anyway o_õ
And xxxHolic always took ages to be released..... I can count on my fingers the number of weekly chapters!

Date: 2010-03-18 07:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] portuge.livejournal.com
My only reaction this is...

LOL, this is so weird...?

But monthly chapters? :( NOOO! I hope it means more than the usual 15 pages per month (I'm hoping 40). If that's so, I might follow the series faithfully again, because reading 15 pages of HOLiC per week isn't really as great as reading around 30+ pages every one month (I used to follow HOLiC's English version only, then decided to read spoilers online)

Well....that was unexpected.
At first i thought it was a bad idea..but now there should be longer chapters,at least 30-35 or even 40 pages, and for Holic..i think that it's better, the only bad thing..is the big..BIG break!
With this..i don't think that Holic is going to end soon....
And now all the mangas that i read are monthly...uh.

Thanks for the info!
