[Funimation Enforces Intelectual Property Rights (2005-12-07 17:42:17)
Funimation recently informed fansub group Shinsen-Subs, "We own or control various exclusive copyrights and trademarks related to the animated motion pictures, including but not limited to, the series known as “Speed Grapher,” “Trinity Blood,” “FullMetal Alchemist,” “Dragon Ball,” “Solty Rei” a.k.a. “Origin,” “Detective Conan” a.k.a. “Case Closed,” and “Tsubasa”." This was after Funimation had contacted the registrar for Shinsen-subs domain name, resulting in the registrar, Joker.com, freezing the domain name. Solty Rei and Tsubasa have not yet been announced for release by Funimation.]--animenewsnetwork.

if they are forcing the fansub group to take down tsubasa (yes, they mean tsubasa chronicle), they possibly have the licensing rights now and just haven't made the marketing announcement yet. (edit: mentioned in the forums...Domain Name: TSUBASA.TV; Registrant: FUNimation Productions, Ltd.) you can read funimation's letter at shinsen-subs' website (scroll down a little).

thus, since most of the group's members are not from the usa, anime releases and news will still be updated, but future tsubasa anime links and such will be f-locked...so make sure you are a member (if you don't see your name in the member area, then you clicked the wrong button).

ps: yes, wish they could spell, too.

and for a random bit of news pertaining to the anime industry

here's why the usa anime industry kinda sucks at times. i know it's one person's opinion, but i'm glad adv didn't get tsubasa. ADV's CEO, John Ledford, sounds like a moron in this interview in Fortune magazine. if they aren't paying the translators to do their job, who's getting all the money off of the $30 dvds? Anyway, Funimation is a decent company. They did a decent job with Fruits Basket. Although, they did dub some songs in a horrendous manner. anyway, there's my tiny commentary for the day.

I was actually choking with rage when I read that article. I might have super-deformed. I don't know who to despise more ardently -- the cretin publishing executives who value "street cred" over production values, or the cretin cosplaying 'otaku' twats who convinced them to adopt that attitude in the first place. No one over the age of eleven should be dressed like an anime character on any day that is not Halloween. No one who cannot read should go into the publishing industry. How could two massive groups of such awe-inspiringly retarded losers manage to overcome all obstacles and find each other against the odds? Forget Syaoran and Sakura; the most amazing love story ever told in the animanga universe is the one involving Moron American Publishing Executives and Moron American Manga/Anime Fans. A love to transcend space and time, indeed.

I am /*NEVER*/ buying another American manga again under any circumstances. I am especially never buying another TokyoPoop manga. What an utterly asinine attitude to take about any sort of legitimate published material, on the part of the article's author as well as the idiots being interviewed. I don't think that article would have been quite so offensively-worded had it dealt with, say, the terrible translation of Joyce Carol Oates' latest novel into Japanese for Asian library nerds. I don't understand why manga is consistently undervalued by the people who distribute it and apparently make a good deal of money off its production, and I refuse to make people that stupid richer. It offends my Darwinian social sensibilities. Fuh.

Well, now I'm good and mad. I think I'm gonna go watch all my Tsubasa Chronicle fansubs to cheer myself up.

Wow, that was the last company I thought would pick up Tsubasa. I totally had my money on Geneon.

Funimation did a nice job with Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist. If they put that kinda tender loving care into Tsubasa maybe it'll actually be interesting. Then again, Funimation tends to... well, jump the gun with the licensing claim thing. (Everyone thought they had One Piece for what? A year and a half? Turned out they didn't, much to the horror of everyone.) Funimation's dubbed songs are always good for a laugh.

Who'd getting all of that 30$ DVD? Japan. Licensing costs are a bitch, and you have to remember how much anime DVD's sell for in Japan. 30$ is pretty cheap for a dual language anime DVD with 4 episodes. As for the interviews and all that... Heh. There are idiots everywhere, in every field, in every profession. "The road to ruin is paved with good intentions."
