Magic Knight Rayearth is coming out as a cheaper dvd box set. I was thinking of picking up the second season only since I like the boys. My question is, is it worth buying? I've never seen the MKR anime and don't know how faithful it is to the manga. What are the opinions of those who've seen it?

There are quite a number of differences. Plot is basically the same but there are characters that don't exist in the manga (like Nova who has a big part). Also in the first season of the anime, they killed Presea off so they introduce a kinda odd plot in order to have "her" around. The ending is also quite different but I actually prefer the anime ending over the manga but that's just my personal opinion.

To me I like the first part of the manga better but the second part in the anime better just because of a few plot points that I felt were better played out in the anime but it can get a bit lengthy in the beginning (you do kinda get a "o...k...why is it taking so long to get anywhere?" in the first few episodes as they stretch things out a lot).

It's been a while but I think the only thing you need to know about the first season to be able to watch the 2nd is that Presea died. Which is one of the reasons I don't like the first season of the anime that much. >_<;

it's a decent anime, but the humor and production is old-school. like someone said above, it has a different ending. i think all clamp's anime productions have endings that miss out on some manga secrets...maybe it's how clamp lets studios produce their works.

if you have access to hulu, you can watch it first...

i've seen that dvd box set...the price is very tempting. hmmmm... :)

Yup~ Especially for Eagle, who is my favorite and is the main reason I like the anime part more just because I like how his story plays out better, though some may disagree with me on that.

Each world gets a pretty good amount of episodes as I recall. When each of the girls ends up with one of the groups.

the ending was the same for both anime & manga in general except for what happens to Eagle. skimming through the characters lists, you can see a few anime-only characters that the 2nd anime season focuses on, too.

Imo, it's kind of hilariously bad. The production quality is pretty low and the anime introduces some new characters that weren't in the manga. I've been watching it with a friend but pretty much the only way we got through it was by making fun. If you don't have a great loyalty to the manga, you may like it.

And the whole Mokona-is-God thing is never revealed. That's the other big difference in the ending.

The Rayearth anime is a steaming pile of cow crap laying atop the dismembered ruins of the manga. Main characters die, it's depressing, the whole ending changes, they NEVER get to go back to Cephiro, more main characters die, doom, gloom, evil!Hikaru twin wants to kiss and kill her simultaneously, more people die, the agent of choosing the pillar changes, dinky magic items, anime-only villains, chaos, art unworthy of CLAMP, more people dying.

That said, we have the whole box set on videos- BUT we bought it without knowing how they had butchered it. While the first season is great, the second season falls into the all-too-common anime trap: “Let's see how much we can change this thing without the manga-ka killing us!”

If you're a huge fan who has to have anything Rayearth, or someone who can deal with sad endings brought about by plot butchering, go for it- but I'm surprised that CLAMP wasn't drawing swords over what the studio did to season 2…

I love MKR anime and manga equally. Personally I have bluray so I'm not willing to shell out buck for dvd when I have bluray. But that's another story.

I'll recommend this anime if you are fan of CLAMP or you are fan of anime in general then I'd say go for it. Try get this cheaply. IMO not worth to shell out lot money for this anime. I don't think second season sucked at all. I love Debonair! I even like Nova, imagine your evil lesbian twin trying kill you also kiss possibly licking you. Great fantasy, haha? True, second season has crummy ending, so what, what anime doesn't have crummy ending expect for Monster.

tl;dr: Recommended and get this cheaply as possible.

I think with a lot of people it was their first exposure to the series, so of course it's close to their heart. |D

Personally, I just love the anime so much! It was my first experience of the Clamp World from a time when I only saw crappy shows on tv xP I could read the manga many years later so Im really fond of the anime plot. In fact, it inspired me for many personal works. I think the plot of the anime, at least for me, was a little more mature and deep at that time (when I was a teenager) than the one on the manga I read years later. Of course, I love the more 'happy ending' in the manga (after all is Clamp! it's like a delight from a very rare happy-time in their work! xDDD) but still, the more psychological and personal view of the inner self of the charas, specially with the Hikaru and Nova (I just LOVE Nova so much! <3) thing was so tuchy for me that Im really glad I could enjoy thi series so early in my otaku life XDDDDD

Well, I recommend it <3 Did you read the whole manga already? even if you didnt, I think you can still enjoy a change for trying something new :P I dont think the differences on the plot ruin the whole manga feeling (all animes usually do the same to plots anyway) but instead, it complements it. So give it a try and hope you enjoy it!! <3
